Though the importance of the day will be mainly attributed to the ceremony and your child’s tutor, extensive preparation is needed to make your child’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah a success. Whether you want a quiet luncheon to celebrate or a formal black tie affair, success lies in the details. Most event planning professionals agree: a successful Bar/Bat Mitzvah can be up to three years in the making! Check out our preparation guide and timeline that will help to make the big day easier and more fun!
6-8 months before the Event
- Contact your synagogue to learn about the process and what timeframe the Rabbi expects.
- Decide on the design and style of the event. Make sure it is in keeping with your budget.
- Contact service providers and vendors, ask your friends or hire an event planning specialist to take the load off your shoulders.
6 months before the Event
- Schedule your child for formal Bar/Bat Mitzvah lessons.
- Book the location with all your selected vendors. Remember that most vendors require a non-refundable deposit to book their services.
- Select a theme that reflects both you and your child’s design aesthetic.
- Help your child by selecting a tzedakah (charity) project, a traditional custom within Bar/Bat Mitzvahs
The Last Six Months before the Event:
- Develop a current guest list, order and send invitation cards, as well as thank you cards and any other relevant stationary.
- Arrange out-of-town accommodations for guests. Hotels can be reserved for groups at cheaper rates. Also, arrange transportation and tend to any details they may need.
- Decide on any other events during the weekend for close friends and family.
- Develop a seating plan.
- Make sure that your child is progressing in his ceremony preparation, but do not place them under too much pressure.
- Confirm all guests with caterer, and re-confirm all vendors for the event.
