Within each category of event professionals, there are always a number of subcategories because many professionals realize they have a specific strength that fits more accurately into a niche market. One such area: wedding planners and wedding designers. Both professionals are very different even though they sound similar, and today we’ll help you understand their similarities, differences, and why you may want to hire both.

Some Background:

Event planners are born for logistics. They have a team of vendors they work with, and they know the best DJ, caterer, and lighting crew in town. No matter how long you contract with one, they will be present on your wedding day. Your planner will create a timeline for your wedding, liaise between you and your vendors, and make sure your event goes smoothly.

Whereas a wedding designer focuses on design and décor. Designers typically are highly creative individuals with a knack for design, however; often times they are also florists, set designers, or interior designers who have highly transferrable skill sets.

They are also quite a few professionals who are both wedding planners and wedding designers. The bonus here is that you’re able to work with a professional who can simultaneously manage the details of your wedding, the most appropriate vendors to use, a keen eye for design and style, and intimate knowledge of both your family dynamics and your color palate. Wedding planners place a lot of emphasis on their clients’ overall experience with their brand (every detail is planned). They will make sure that your vision for your wedding is executed perfectly and nothing will go wrong (at least nothing you’re aware of). Having a wedding planner and wedding designer in one professional is the best of both worlds!

The Similarities:

  • Planners and designers want you to enjoy the process of wedding planning and will make sure that you have fun.
  • Designers and planners dedicate themselves to creating a wedding filled with details that personalize your wedding and tell your story.
  • Both have a host of vendors they recommend to have the best wedding possible.
  • Both will be on-site (at your wedding and reception) throughout your wedding day.
  • Wedding designers and planners tend to be highly creative.

The Differences:

Wedding Planners:

  • These pros are focused on your wedding day’s logistics.
  • From timelines to family relationships, event planners know every detail about your wedding.
  • Your planner will lead your rehearsal dinner the night before and will be available the entire time your vendors are working.

Event Designers:

  • Event designer are focused on creating stunning visual displays at your wedding.
  • Your designer will likely only know you, your fiancé, and your closest family members.
  • They will source the best in everything: linens, flowers, and details. If they can’t find it, they will make it themselves.
  • Your wedding designer’s central purpose is to transform your space into your personal wedding brand. Once they do this, they typically leave and only return once the ceremony is finished.

Why Should You Consider Hiring a Professional who does both Wedding Design and Wedding Planning?

A planner who is also a designer will have the ability fill both professional roles with the help of a few assistants. The major benefit is that you’re able to work with one professional who will know all your likes, dislikes, and greatest wishes for you wedding day.
